Activated carbon for GSM and 2-MIB

Date :2021-12-08
Classify: Activated Carbon

Odor control in drinking water treatment has always been an important challenge faced by water plants. Activated carbon, as a multifunctional adsorption material, is widely used in the field of water treatment due to its unique pore structure and excellent adsorption performance. In particular, activated carbon has shown excellent treatment effects in removing substances such as geosmin (GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) that cause odor in water.

The reason why activated carbon can effectively remove these odor substances is mainly due to its developed pore structure and huge specific surface area (usually between 800-1500m²/g). This unique physicochemical property enables it to effectively capture organic pollutants in water through physical adsorption and chemical action, thereby improving water quality and enhancing the sensory quality of drinking water.

What is GSM and MIB?

Geosmin(GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) are the main sources of malodor in drinking water. The main reason for the production of these two substances is seaweed pollution. The odor thresholds of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) are so low that very small amounts can cause unpleasant odors and tastes in drinking water. Therefore, it is very important to remove geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB).

The blue-green algae in the water produce geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB). Both geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) are substances with a foul odor, which releases a mildly soily smell. When blue-green algae produce a large amount of these substances in drinking water, it will cause the water some odor. The proliferation of algae is affected by the climate, so the problem of geosmin and 2-methylisobornol usually occurs in summer and warmer seasons.

Which type of activated carbon is suitable for GSM and MIB removal?

Activated carbon adsorption is still the most commonly used method for removing odorous substances from drinking water, including granular and powdered activated carbon. The activated carbon generated by carbonization and activation has a developed pore structure, a surface area of 500~1500 m2/g, and good adsorption performance. There are three main application forms of activated carbon adsorption of odorous substances in drinking water treatment: First, when the raw water has a sudden odor, powdered activated carbon (PAC) is added as an emergency treatment measure before flocculation or during flocculation; second, granular activated carbon (GAC) is added for adsorption after the raw water is filtered.
Zhulin activated carbon powder has made test and reached a good effect. Among them, the removal rate of GSM has reached more than 90%, and 2-MIB has reached about 80%.
